Navigating Life’s Transitions with Self-Compassion and Returning to Your Core Values

July marked a significant transition for me: reducing my clinical time to 0.7 for the first time since my intern year. This shift, though exciting, brought up self-doubt and the challenge of managing my “extra” time without falling into the trap of overloading myself with new projects and commitments.

Embracing change can be daunting, especially when it disrupts routines and raises questions about our worth and productivity. For me, this meant consciously returning to my core values—authenticity, abundance, time freedom, and deep connections. These values became my compass, guiding me to align my actions, habits, and schedule with what truly matters, rather than simply filling the void with busy work.

Transitions, whether they involve new seasons, phases, or job changes, can trigger a range of emotions and uncertainties. It’s easy to slip into people-pleasing tendencies and porous boundaries that dilute our energy and focus. To navigate these changes successfully, it’s crucial to approach them with self-compassion and a clear understanding of our unique values and priorities.

Here are some tips for approaching transitions with grace and intention:

1. Honor Your Core Values: Reflect on what truly matters to you and let these values guide your decisions and actions.

2. Set Boundaries: Be mindful of not overcommitting or letting others' needs overshadow your own.

3. Practice Self-Compassion: Allow yourself grace during periods of adjustment and remember that it’s entirely expected and normal to experience doubts. You can learn skills to manage uncomfortable emotions and remain true to yourself and your desires.

4. Stay Focused: Align your habits and schedule with your core values, ensuring that your time and energy are spent on what truly matters to YOU (not to your coworkers, employer, friends, parents, spouse, children).
